Four new walks in the southern Tarkine have just been opened, enabling visitors to experience the inspiration and untouched beauty of 60 million year old rainforest.
Two of the new walks start from Corinna, an old gold mining town that has recently been transformed into one of Australia’s most acclaimed ecotourism experiences.
The HUON PINE walk is a boarded, wheel chair accessible walk along the Pieman River. Rich with interpretative signage, this gentle, twenty minute walk enables guests to feel the rainforest and river without being physically challenged.
An extension of the Huon Pine walk is the SAVAGE RIVER walk, a more demanding 2 km walk over a saddle of myrtle beech temperate rainforest. This new walk culminates in views of the wreck of the SS Croydon, at the mouth of the Savage River. An exhilarating and breathtaking walk, guests at Corinna can arrange for a pick up by boat at the Savage River, or take the return journey back on foot.
A beautiful secret has been uncovered with access to LOVER’S FALLS being made possible by the construction of boarded, bridged track into a unique waterfall set in a cylindrical karst rock formation, towering above 60 million year old primary rainforest. From the viewing platform, guests are be inspired by the beauty by day, and in awe of the glow worms by night. Access is by boat only, which can be arranged by the friendly staff at Corinna Wilderness Experience.
Recently, a new walk that joins the mouth of the Savage River and the start of the walk to Mount Donaldson, has been completed. It is known as the LINK WALK and follows the Savage River until it meets the bridge on the Western Explorer Highway.
These walks are a wonderful addition to the famous WHYTE RIVER WALK, a 75 minute walk through rainforest, which starts and finishes at Corinna. Other walks in the southern Tarkine include the four hour trek to the top of Mount Donaldson, and a full day walk from Pieman Heads to Granville Harbour along the wild, west coast hugging the Southern Ocean.
Funds to build some of the the new walks came from the Commonwealth Government’s Tarkine Walks Program. Corinna management has agreed to maintain these walks on behalf of the Parks and Wildlife Service of Tasmania.
